Driving Education and Driver Training Frequently Asked Questions
How old do I need to be to get a drivers permit?
"People over 18 still need a permit to drive, but they get an "adult permit" instead. You must be 15 1/2 years old to get a drivers permit at the California DMV. However, you may take the classroom or online driver ed course before that time. It is actually a pretty good idea to get it done early, so you can get the permit at 15 1/2, hold it for the required 6 months, and then get a license at 16.
Do I need a driver ed course if I am 17½ years old?
It is not required by DMV if you are over 17½. It is a good idea to take it for safety reasons. Also, it may earn you some big discounts on insurance coverage, depending on your policy.

- Take your first driving lesson
- Practice with parents (50 hours total, 10 of those at night)

- Take a behind the wheel test for your license
Why schedule lessons so far apart?
Scheduling lessons 5-6 weeks apart allows students time to practice the skills that their instructor has taught them previously and sets them up for the next lessons! Lessons progress pretty quickly so practice time is vital. In fact if students haven't practiced enough, instructors won't be able to safely move into the more advanced skills on the next lesson. You'll wind up repeating and using valuable lesson time as practice time instead of learning new things.
Can I take more lessons if I need them?
Absolutely! Every student is different- we encourage you to identify and seek your ideal driving program. We offer add-on lessons and packages on our services page.
Is there fee if I cancel lesson?
There is a cancellation fee of $45 for any lesson cancelled within 48 hours of the scheduled drive time. This also applies if the student doesn't have their permit for the lesson.
Can I transfer lessons between family members?
Unfortunately, there are no transfers of lessons or unused portions of packages.
Why can't I see the availability calendar on your website?
Available appointments can only be seen by our active students. If you want to get an idea of the wait time for the first lesson, please call our office. Their estimate won't guarantee an appointment, because all appointments are available online for active scheduling at any time.
Please feel free to call or email with any questions at all. We are glad to help!
