To get a Driving Permit
Requirements
- Finish driver education course (usually online but it is offered at a few of the high schools on a limited basis).
- Must be 15 1/2 years old.
- Schedule the DMV written test for a permit. Walk-ins are accepted at DMV, but the wait times can be crazy (1-4 hours, depending on the day and the DMV)
What to bring to DMV
- Certificate of completion of Driver Education course (pink colored form),
- Confirmation Number for filing out DL44 online application form
- 2 forms of Proof of Residency (i.e. Smud. PG&E bill, insurance, registration, etc.)
- Original Birth Certificate
- Social Security card
- DMV will issue a permit if you pass the test but it is NOT VALID UNTIL YOU BEGIN DRIVING LESSONS
To Get a Driver's License
Requirements
- Finish 6 hours of behind the wheel training
- Finish 50 hours of additional practice, 10 in darkness
- Must hold your permit for 6 months
- Must be 16 years old
- A Behind the Wheel "driver test" is required, so an appointment must be made with DMV for the date and time (online at www.dmv.ca.gov or call 800-777-0133)
What to bring to DMV Driving TestAppointment
- Permit (signed by a parent saying the student is ready)
- Driver Training completion certificate (gold colored form issued by the driving school on the last lesson)
- Legal and safe vehicle
- Proof of current registration on the vehicle
- Proof of insurance on the vehicle
