DMV Steps Under 18

To get a Driving Permit

Requirements

  • Finish driver education course (usually online but it is offered at a few of the high schools on a limited basis).
  • Must be 15 1/2 years old.
  • Schedule the DMV written test for a permit. Walk-ins are accepted at DMV, but the wait times can be crazy (1-4 hours, depending on the day and the DMV)

What to bring to DMV

  • Certificate of completion of Driver Education course (pink colored form),
  • Confirmation Number for filing out DL44 online application form
  • 2 forms of Proof of Residency (i.e. Smud. PG&E bill, insurance, registration, etc.)
  • Original Birth Certificate
  • Social Security card
  • DMV will issue a permit if you pass the test but it is NOT VALID UNTIL YOU BEGIN DRIVING LESSONS

To Get a Driver's License

Requirements

  • Finish 6 hours of behind the wheel training
  • Finish 50 hours of additional practice, 10 in darkness
  • Must hold your permit for 6 months
  • Must be 16 years old
  • A Behind the Wheel "driver test" is required, so an appointment must be made with DMV for the date and time (online at www.dmv.ca.gov or call 800-777-0133)

What to bring to DMV Driving TestAppointment

  • Permit (signed by a parent saying the student is ready)
  • Driver Training completion certificate (gold colored form issued by the driving school on the last lesson)
  • Legal and safe vehicle
  • Proof of current registration on the vehicle
  • Proof of insurance on the vehicle
